I loved the consistent humorous undertone in this book.

The writing was top notch, flowing naturally. Admittedly some conflicts fo hand-waved by the passage of time where I would have preferred more depth. Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase. Great book, a very fun read.

Ciaphas Cain – Wikipedia

This book is very well written and the setting and characters are all very complex and unique. Fun and witty, unusual for a 40k book. A good story whit a lot of action. Follow a man who just want an easy life in a galaxy where it is not possible. One person found this helpful. A little beat up but totally worth the purchase.

I am a fan of the well rhe Warhammer novels such as those by Dan Abnettand unfortunately, this is not one of them. Sandy Mitchell’s characterization of the protagonist Ciaphas Cain is shallow and overwrought, and not at all believable.

The writing style itself makes heavy use of ham-fisted foreshadowing “And if I had known what I know now then blah blah”interspersed with an absurd number of narrative breaking footnotes from the “editor. The only positive aspect is that it is a fluff read and should not take the average reader too long to work through.

There are a variety of reasons why I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy this book so much.

Firstly, empfror course, there’s the obvious fact that humor in the 40K universe is always a tricky proposition. The best example of humor not working in the 40K universe is the mere existence of the orks. But, reading this first book, what amazed me was how carefully crafted the characters are.

For the Emperor (Novel) – Warhammer 40k – Lexicanum

There are moments of absolute terror actually DOABLE in 40K when you have someone who’s scared to dietenderness so rare it stands outand amusement this book is honestly not that funny; it’s more like a dry sarcasm than slapstick. I have no idea if Mitchell can keep up this sort of tone and likability for very long, but at least for the first book, I was hooked.
